The
City of Zilwaukee maintains three parks within its boundary:
Johnson Park, Riverfront Park, and Zilwaukee Community
Park. Another park facility is currently in the planning
and land acquisition stages. Any future improvements to
any of these parks will meet all barrier-free laws and
regulations.
Johnson
Park
Johnson Park is a 1.2 acre neighborhood park. The park
is located across from the City Fire Department at the
corner of Cornell and Moran Streets. The park contains
a pavilion, picnic area, and playground equipment and
is nicely landscaped with a variety of trees and is well
maintained. Adjacent land uses include residential and
institutional. Parking is limited with only street side
parking available on Cornell Street.
Riverfront
Park
Riverfront Park is a 6.0 acre community park located
south of the Zilwaukee Bridge and along the bank of
the Saginaw River. The park property is currently
leased from Consumers Energy on a 50-year renewable
lease. Johnson Street and Fischer Street access the
park. Riverfront Park consists of picnic areas, pavilions,
restrooms, a boat launch, and is well maintained.
A large unimproved parking lot for cars and trucks
with boat trailers is available.
Zilwaukee Community Park
Zilwaukee Community Park consists
of 11.8 acres with a main entrance located off of Adams
Street at the end of Jones Street. Community Park has ample
recreational activities with large paved parking lots. The
park is home to the Zilwaukee community pool and pool house,
tennis courts, a basketball court, a baseball field, playground,
and picnic area. The pool house is the main shelter in the
park with restrooms, but three other pavilions or shelters
are located on the property. Community Park is well maintained
and well used.
Zilwaukee
Multi-Use Trail System
The Zilwaukee Multi-Use Trail System is
a proposed 1.74 mile non-motorized trail system. Upon
completion, the trail will provide a transportation linkage
that connects Riverfront Park, Community Park, Bridgeview
Commercial Center, and other proposed and existing regional
non-motorized trail systems in Saginaw, Bay and Midland
Counties.
Portions of the land necessary for the trail
have recently been deeded to the City of Zilwaukee as
easements. The 0.7 acre property necessary for the proposed
Trailhead Park in the Bridgeview Commercial Center, and
a grant for Phase I construction, have also recently been
obtained by the City. Another portion of the necessary
property is currently under investigation for purchase
by the City’s Tax Increment Finance Authority. This
property may also have additional recreational uses, such
as ice skating on the existing pond.
